Beneath the facade of dazzling performances lurk secrets, murder, and mayhem.

Vinnie, a criminal on the run, finds refuge in a travelling show. He sets up his own vaudeville troupe just as the Great Depression hits Melbourne. Smitten with Belle, his star performer, a battle for her love ensues when Artis, his protégé, lays eyes on her.

Lured with promises of fame and fortune by both men, Belle joins Artis’s new showbiz venture, leaving Vinnie hell-bent on revenge.

A marriage of convenience provides Vinnie with the funds and power he needs to destroy Artis’s business and win Belle back. But when Vinnie makes a deal with the mob, it ends up costing him everything when a blackmail letter gets into the wrong hands.

Is Belle playing Artis and Vinnie in her quest for fame? Can her love be trusted? Is she a pawn in a twisted game, or the mastermind behind the curtain?

Will a love child be the ultimate undoing in their bitter feud?

I was fortunate to purchase a copy of this book early in its release. It’s a story that rings true in so many ways as it unfolds deep themes woven so expertly and entertainingly together as it follows the lives of Vinnie and Artis, the two main characters. The themes include surviving the Great Depression, family violence, exploitation of women and workers, the love of performing, love and passion, evil personified, love and forgiveness personified.

The way the story is told is both authentic and entertaining. There are insufficient books of this caliber about the context and period in which the story is set. I highly recommend that you read this book. You will love it.

A beautifully constructed tale of jealousy and revenge which was only ever going to result in pain for everyone involved. This tale is a testiment to human determination to obtain the object of their affection at all cost. The pages come to life with Jacqx’s clever writing making the characters and their interwoven stories come to life in the most graphic and beautiful way. Set with the backdrop of a severe depression and deep life struggles, Jacqx is able to give all the characters the opportunity to speak and show their spirit – this was a fabulously engrossing read; I’m just sorry it’s over – here’s to your next one!

I couldn’t put this book down and read it in one sitting during my flight from Brisbane to Perth, with a stop in Sydney. Managed to finish the book just prior to landing at Perth airport. Eyesight was blurry but spirit was refreshed.😂. The storyline is absolutely riveting and filled with emotional depth, exploring human flaws in a way that feels both raw and relatable. The characters are incredibly well-drawn, offering a fascinating study of human nature and resilience. Through their journeys, I found myself cursing, crying, and reflecting deeply. The historical backdrop of Australian entertainers during the above period added a rich layer to the story, making it both educational and entertaining. The moral of the story is powerful and leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommend! Have ordered a few books to give to friends for the Christmas season.

From the moment I picked up this book I found it hard to put it down. I looked forward to the moment I could continue reading it as the storyline was so grasping. I loved how Jacqx brought the characters to life with so much educated description of the life and times of an era that is almost forgotten. I loved the travels of Belle and Artis through their vaudeville shows. My mind was so entertained that I felt like I was sitting in the audience watching the shows.

Loved this book , it pulled at my heartstrings, I laughed I cried sat on the edge of my seat. Rooting for some of the characters , then being shocked at what they were doing.
The way the plays were described I felt like I was there part of the audience.
I’m going to give this book a 5 star review.
Can’t wait to read more books from this author.

Easy to read story that captured the time and culture of travelling shows. A nice way to better understand the time of our parents or grandparents parents.

This book had me feeling so many different emotions, the author did a magnificent job on these characters and how to pull your heartstrings.
I couldn’t stop reading, I didn’t want it to end.
The real gritty reality or the world we live in, issues written about things people shy away from.
    Well done, 5 stars!

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The authors flair of writing made it a breeze to read while keeping me fully engaged and captivated by the story bringing to life the harsh realities of the times in the 1930’s in Melbourne .
